INFO ON 1800's WITH CRACKED FRAMES
Frame Weld Safety Recall Expanded
On January 26, 2005, American Honda expanded its existing frame weld safety recall on 2002 and 2003 GL1800/A Gold Wings to include virtually all previously un-recalled 2003 GL1800/A’s and some 2004 GL1800/A motorcycles. The expanded recall affects a greater number of units than the original recall of September 2003.
A customer notification letter will be sent to all registered owners of motorcycles affected by this recall extension. Customers will be directed to contact their local Honda dealerships to have the recall procedure done.
The recall procedure adds additional TIG welding to the frame of affected bikes where the lower cross member meets the side rails.
The latest units affected by recall are:
2003
GL1800 (Non-ABS): From VIN: 1HFSC470*3A204861 through VIN: 1HFSC470*3A212217
GL1800A (ABS): From VIN: 1HFSC474*3A201127 through VIN: 1HFSC474*3A203256
2004
GL1800 (Non-ABS): From VIN: 1HFSC470*4A300001 through VIN: 1HFSC470*4A301683
GL1800A (ABS): From VIN: 1HFSC474*4A300001 through VIN: 1HFSC474*4A300334
The latest recall amounts to 11,500 additional units affected, 9,485 additional 2003 motorcycles and 2,015 2004 motorcycles.
Previously announced (September 12, 2003) units affected were:
2002
GL1800 (Non-ABS): From VIN: 1HFSC470*2A111803 through VIN: 1HFSC470*2A113582
GL1800A (ABS): From VIN: 1HFSC474*2A102393 through VIN: 1HFSC474*2A102823
2003
GL1800 (Non-ABS): From VIN: 1HFSC470*3A200001 through VIN: 1HFSC470*3A204860
GL1800A (ABS): From VIN: 1HFSC474*3A200001 through VIN: 1HFSC474*3A201126
The number of units in the original recall was 8,193 units. 2,209 of these were 2002 Gold Wings; 5,984 of these were 2003 Gold Wings.
In all, 19,693 motorcycles will have been within the range of these recall parameters, excluding Gold Wings that have had been modified by the addition of sidecars or trike conversion kits.
A note from Wing World Editor Nick Hoppner:
"We understand that the re-welding procedure has been modified somewhat by Honda, so until the owner's local dealership has received the most current recall notice and instructions from Honda, fulfillment of the recall procedures may be delayed."

FRESHNESS COUNTS
Tires
are a chemical product and are subject to degradation over time. That's why
every tire comes with a date code- essentially the tire's birthday- stamped
right on the sidewall. Street- legal tires have a DOT code, a collection of
numbers and letters after the word "DOT", which stands for Department of
Transportation. The last four numbers will be the week and year of manufacture
.So, "1702" means the tire was made on the 17th week of 2002. Try to buy as
fresh a tire as you can, obviously.......
